Preseason Lists Are Marginally Useful

July 25, 2022, 12:49 p.m.

I greatly dislike the “List of Stuff” offseason content parade. Unfortunately, it draws eyeballs and eyeballs == $$. Well at least that is the idea. There are some useful aspects of putting down a list of players or teams or coaches. It helps get everyone organized and provides something like a frame of reference.

The league is gearing up for media day this week and so has released the preseason league “watch list”. It is essentially “these are some of the good players, folks”. Again, that is kind of useful. Only kind of.

We can say, look out for Gavin Hardison on UTEP, he might put up some numbers given he has been in the league and threw for 3K yards last year. He is missing some weapons (Jacob Cowing is now at Arizona) and that will take a bite out of his production. See, this is only a watch list, and it has already sparked even that reaction so it has served its purpose.
